Sewing Circles were a series of free textile workshops led by visual artist Janice Murray.
Artefacts and images from the home and the Sekers Fabric archive acted as prompts for sharing memories relating to women’s creativity in the home. Participants had the opportunity to share existing skills and gain new ones, creating their own original textile art expressing their memories, thoughts and feelings.
Handpicked Productions worked with Research Fellow Rachel Carroll from Teesside University, who took part in the workshops as a Participant Observer.
The project ran over four weeks and culminated in an exhibition and celebration of participants’ work and achievements.

We are currently exploring funding opportunities to support additional dates and bring this project to more people.
